The best estimate is that McCain has a 1 in 50 chance of winning today. Ultimately, he got beat by a better candidate. McCain made things worse for himself by making some bad decisions, particularly running away from the political center and picking Palin. Then he got jobbed by the economy at the last minute. However, what really must drive him crazy was being a victim of George W. Bush twice.
Bush ran a dirty primary campaign against him in 2000, using unfounded rumors to turn the religious right against him, and the fiscal conservatives and libertarian republicans sold their souls to a fake messiah. If they would have stuck with McCain and nominated him, he probably beats Gore without a recount in 2000, and would just be completing his second term. He'd have kept his eye on the ball in Afghanistan, and wouldn't have invaded Iraq, and we wouldn't have become an international pariah because of unilateralism and torture. Instead, Bush wins and turns into one of the 5 worst presidents ever, poisoning the well for McCain in 2008.
Hey, John, we know the deck was stacked against you. Sorry, man, but we understand and like you, so you'll get a third act as the lion of the senate.
Welcome to the arena
Here you will find my opinions about the application of political principles to the news of the day. My perspective is clearly from the conservative point of view. This is a place to express my concerns, passions, irritations, and commentary as they apply to the current political issues of the day. Political is defined loosely in this blog. There may be posts that are not strictly political, such as movie reviews, medical topics, religious commentary and thoughts on history. I hope interest will be generated by blending my thoughts with current events. I anticipate that there will be honest disagreement. I encourage feedback to my posts with the goal of achieving clarity of disagreement. I will strive to keep the conversation polite and respectful, while avoiding political correctness and maintaining tension to keep things exciting. Hopefully, friends and family will enjoy frequenting the arena for a little intellectual stimulation and good ol' fashioned debate.
