Congress wants to spend $550 million to buy 8 new jets for congressional travel. If I may, please indulge me in a little cynical commentary (I know this is shocking). Remember a few months ago when the executives from Ford, GM, and Chrysler were summoned to Capitol Hill and then savaged because they traveled in their corporate jets instead of driving? In fact, the financial institutions were also derided for wasting tax payer dollars with all their corporate travel. And remember how we've been told by congress how important public transportation is to save the planet from certain death by global warming? The evils of carbon dioxide production through the use of fossil fuels could doom us all. And do you remember just recently when President Obama was deriding some in congress for wanting to buy additional F-22 fighter jets beyond what the Defense Department asked for?
Well I guess these rules don't apply when it benefits the congress. The military currently provides for congressional air travel. A pentagon spokesman said that they didn't request the planes and don't need them. That's not stopping congress. What a bunch of hypocrites.
This is a classic example of elitism in the political class, where they exempt themselves from their own self-righteous edicts that they expect the sheeple to follow.
Here's a detailed article explaining how the entire congressional travel policy works.
Welcome to the arena
Here you will find my opinions about the application of political principles to the news of the day. My perspective is clearly from the conservative point of view. This is a place to express my concerns, passions, irritations, and commentary as they apply to the current political issues of the day. Political is defined loosely in this blog. There may be posts that are not strictly political, such as movie reviews, medical topics, religious commentary and thoughts on history. I hope interest will be generated by blending my thoughts with current events. I anticipate that there will be honest disagreement. I encourage feedback to my posts with the goal of achieving clarity of disagreement. I will strive to keep the conversation polite and respectful, while avoiding political correctness and maintaining tension to keep things exciting. Hopefully, friends and family will enjoy frequenting the arena for a little intellectual stimulation and good ol' fashioned debate.
